Creative Destruction Thoughts/Notes

I've been pessimistic about the future of the labor economy for sometime. What follows is my attempt at fleshing out these thoughts using the economic concept of creative destruction as the central model.

Creative Destruction
Creative destruction is an economic concept popularized and fully developed by Austrian-American economist Joseph Schumpeter in his 1942 book Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy. The principle views economic growth not as a smooth, continuous process, but as a series of disruptive, revolutionary waves.

At its heart, creative destruction relies on a constant cycle of obsolescence and renewal. It is driven by entrepreneurial innovation.

  1. The Creative Dynamic: An entrepreneur introduces an innovation—such as a new technology, a more efficient production process, a new market, or a novel organizational structure.

  2. The Destructive Dynamic: This innovation creates superior value, shifting consumer demand away from established businesses. Firms that rely on older, less efficient methods lose market share, see their profit margins collapse, and ultimately go bankrupt or are forced to adapt.

Schumpeter described this process as an organic, internal necessity of the capitalist system:
"The process of Industrial Mutation... that incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one. This process of Creative Destruction is the essential fact about capitalism."

For consumers, creative destruction drives down prices and increases the abundance of everyday goods through vastly more efficient production. At the same time, it replaces obsolete items with entirely new, superior technologies that offer conveniences and capabilities previous generations couldn't buy at any price.

For workers, the primary detriment of creative destruction is acute economic insecurity caused by sudden skill obsolescence, which can quickly devalues years of specialized experience. This frequently results in involuntary job loss, prolonged structural unemployment, and painful downward wage mobility—often forcing workers into lower-paying, less secure fields or leaving entire single-industry communities economically stranded. Over time, the labor displaced by creative destruction has consistently been reabsorbed into newly created industries, expanded sectors, or entirely new professions. Does this still hold true?

Historic Example: The Industrialization of Textiles
The transformation of the textile industry during the industrial revolution is a stark illustration of creative destruction. Before the mid-18th century, textile production was a highly decentralized, labor-intensive cottage industry. Spinning yarn and weaving cloth were done by hand by artisans.  

1. The Creative Wave: Mechanization

A series of rapid technological innovations completely revolutionized how cloth was made:

The Spinning Jenny (1764), The Water Frame (1769), The Power Loom (1785)

These innovations massively increased productivity. A task that previously took a skilled artisan weeks could suddenly be accomplished by a machine in a matter of hours, driving the cost of clothing down exponentially.

2. The Destructive Wave: The Fall of the Artisans

The massive efficiency gains of the factories came at a severe cost to the existing economic order:

Obsolescence of the Cottage Industry: Independent hand spinners and weavers could not compete with the low prices and high volume of factory-made goods. Their profit margins collapsed, and their specialized skills were rapidly devalued.

The Luddite Movement: The social and economic pain was so intense that it sparked violent resistance. Between 1811 and 1816, groups of English textile workers known as Luddites destroyed the automated weaving and spinning machinery that had replaced them, protesting the loss of their livelihoods and the erosion of standard working conditions.

3. The Realignment and Economic Growth

Despite the intense social friction and temporary displacement of workers, the destruction of the old system ultimately cleared the path for a much larger, more prosperous economic landscape:

Job Creation: While hand-weaving jobs vanished, the booming factory system created hundreds of thousands of new jobs in factory operations, machine maintenance, engineering, and iron smelting.

Economic Spillover: The massive demand for cotton and wool revolutionized global trade, shipping, and logistics. The need to power these factories also accelerated the coal mining industry and steam engine development, fueling the wider Industrial Revolution.

Mass Availability: For the average consumer, clothing transformed from a scarce, expensive luxury asset into a cheap, widely accessible commodity, vastly improving the general standard of living.

In Schumpeter's framework, the painful elimination of the independent artisan class was the direct cost of shifting labor and capital into a highly efficient, industrialized system that fundamentally changed the global economy.

The End of Creative Destruction?
There's something that has worried me about the idea of creative destruction for sometime. When I first learned about it in school it was taught in a way that suggested it was a continuous cycle where jobs in old industries vanished but were eventually offset by jobs in new industries. In other words, it was a self-correcting cycle

Old Industry Destroyed -> Labor Freed Up -> Redirected to New Innovation

But is it reasonable to view creative destructions as a kind of economic law where lost jobs are only temporarily displaced?

Let me introduce a simple thought experiment. Let's say that technology has advanced to the point that all human tasks can be performed better and cheaper by some sort of robot. Let's refer to this collection of technologies as the universal robot. How would such innovation affect the creative destruction cycle?

It seems apparent that such technology would be fatal to the long term employment of most humans. Innovation would continue to free up labor but there would be no place for that labor to go.

For instance, when automobiles rendered the horse-and-buggy obsolete, the displacement was severe. However, freed-up labor wasn't permanently stranded. Buddy drivers, stable keepers and blacksmiths transitioned into auto manufacturing, road construction, gas station operation, mechanics, taxi drivers and long-haul trucking.

In the universal robot scenario, if autonomous self driving vehicles are introduced, drivers in the transportation and transit industry are displaced but the "next step" isn't a transition to, say, repairing or managing the autonomous fleet. The universal robot system manufactures the trucks, builds the infrastructure, services the engines, and manages logistics software.

An Asymmetrical Transition
My use of the universal robot system isn't a suggestion that we have achieved such technology. It is simply a way of logically demonstrating that labor in the creative destruction model is not an immutable law of economics. The hyperbolic example of the universal robot presents clear conditions in which it would no longer hold true.  

The more relevant concern is not that society suddenly jumps from today’s economy to a fully automated one. It is that movement in that direction may produce a long period in which the destruction of jobs persistently outpaces the creation of new ones.

Earlier technological revolutions often displaced workers from one set of tasks while creating large new categories of human work. The automobile eliminated many horse-and-buggy occupations, but it also required people to build cars, pave roads, operate repair shops, drive taxis and trucks, manage fuel distribution, and manufacture the many inputs used by the auto industry. The displaced worker did not necessarily obtain one of those new jobs, but the economy still created many jobs that machines could not perform.

Advanced automation could weaken that pattern. A new autonomous transportation system might displace drivers, dispatchers, mechanics, warehouse workers, and some logistics personnel while requiring comparatively few people to design, supervise, and maintain it. If the same technologies can also build the vehicles, construct the infrastructure, diagnose failures, write and update the software, and manage the supply chain, then the usual sources of replacement employment shrink as well.

The issue, then, is not whether innovation creates any new jobs. It almost certainly will. The issue is whether it creates enough new human jobs, of sufficient quality and accessibility, to absorb the number of workers whose tasks it eliminates.

Breakdown of the Economic Cycle
In the economic cycle, labor isn't just a cost factor; it is also the source of market demand.

Standard Cycle:

Robot Breakdown:

Without labor reallocation, wages fall toward zero across the broader population. Even if goods become vastly cheaper and more abundant through universal automation, consumers lack the purchasing power to acquire them. The cycle breaks because creative destruction converts former income earners into economically stranded non-consumers.

*What about the elites? 
Corporate owners would have to deal with drastically reduced demand. Do they simply recalibrate to serve the only entities that still have purchasing power, namely, other corporate owner?

The "Faster Horse" Problem

In the past, technology replaced human muscle power and routine mechanical tasks, which allowed humans to pivot to cognitive, creative, and interpersonal roles.

Economist Wassily Leontief famously used a parable about horses to explain the risk of modern technological shifts: for decades, the introduction of the steam engine and early machinery actually increased the demand for horses to pull carts to and from train stations. But eventually, the internal combustion engine arrived, and horses were completely substituted out of the economy. They didn't get "retrained" into new jobs; their economic utility plummeted to near zero.

If AI and advanced robotics can replicate both muscle and advanced cognitive processing, humans risk running out of unique economic skillsets to pivot toward.

Asymmetrical Job Creation

The mathematical problem with modern creative destruction is the sheer ratio of jobs destroyed to jobs created. Digital and software-driven innovations scale with almost zero marginal cost, meaning they require incredibly few people to generate massive value.

When digital or AI innovations destroy traditional administrative, creative, or technical professions, they don't replace them with a new mass-labor industry. They replace a sector employing millions with a highly concentrated sector employing thousands of elite specialists

The Velocity vs. Adaptation Gap

Even if new jobs are created—such as "Prompt Engineers," "AI Ethics Auditors," or professions we can't yet conceive—the velocity of the destruction is outpacing the human capacity for biological and educational adaptation.

  • The Old Pace: The transition from agriculture to industrial manufacturing took roughly 100 to 150 years. This allowed the shift to happen across generations. A farmer's grandson went to school to become a machinist.

  • The New Pace: A single software update or algorithmic breakthrough can alter or devalue an entire profession (like graphic design, technical writing, or data entry) in eighteen months. A 45-year-old professional cannot easily or repeatedly reinvent their entire cognitive skill set every five years to chase a diminishing pool of novel jobs.

The Split Brain

In the mid-20th century, a radical treatment for severe, uncontrollable epilepsy involved cutting the corpus callosum — the thick bundle of over 200 million nerve fibers that connects the left and right hemispheres of the brain. The surgery successfully stopped the electrical storms of seizures from spreading, but researchers Roger Sperry (who won a Nobel Prize for this) and Michael Gazzaniga noticed something extraordinary: severing that connection essentially created two independent minds within a single body.

Contralateral Wiring

The brain is cross-wired. The left hemisphere controls the right side of the body and processes information from the right visual field. The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and processes the left visual field. In a normal brain, this information is instantly shared across the corpus callosum. In a split-brain patient, it is completely trapped in whatever hemisphere received it.


The Classic Experiment: Speech vs. Action

Researchers would have a split-brain patient stare at a dot in the center of a screen and flash words or pictures to either the left or right side.

  • If a picture of a spoon was flashed to the right (Left Brain): The patient could easily say, "I see a spoon."

  • If a picture of a spoon was flashed to the left (Right Brain): The patient would say, "I didn't see anything." Why? Because the right hemisphere saw the spoon, but it doesn't have the ability to speak. The left hemisphere (which handles speech) genuinely didn't see it.

  • The twist: If researchers asked the patient to reach under a table with their left hand (controlled by the right brain) and find the object they just saw, they would feel around and successfully pull out the spoon — even while their speaking left brain continued to insist they saw nothing.

Hemispheric Specialization

The experiments proved that the two halves of the brain have distinct specialties, though they usually work as a seamless team.

The "Interpreter" Phenomenon

Perhaps the most profound discovery was the left brain's role as "The Interpreter."

When the right hemisphere was given a command (like "Walk") via the left visual field, the patient would stand up and start walking. When the researchers asked the patient why they stood up, the left hemisphere (which didn't see the command) didn't say, "I don't know." Instead, it instantly fabricated a plausible excuse, like, "I'm going to get a drink of water."

This revealed that the left hemisphere constantly creates a narrative to make sense of our actions, even when it has no idea what the true underlying motivation was.

Pesticides and Parkinson's Disease

Startling evidence of the link between pesticides and Parkinson's disease.

A 2022 Meta-Analysis: Published in various forms (including systematic reviews such as those in Molecular Neurodegeneration and Environmental Health), this research aggregated data from dozens of cohort and case-control studies. It established the baseline general risk increase of 1.34- to 1.56-fold for individuals with regular pesticide exposure compared to the general population.

The Agricultural Health Study (AHS): A major, long-term study conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the EPA, following over 80,000 farmers and their spouses in Iowa and North Carolina. This is the source of the data linking Paraquat and Rotenone to a 2.5 times higher risk of PD.

Fraser Spiral Illusion

 





The Fraser spiral illusion is an optical illusion that was first described by the British psychologist Sir James Fraser (1863–1936) in 1908

The illusion is also known as the false spiral, or by its original name, the twisted cord illusion. The overlapping black arc segments appear to form a spiral; however, the arcs are a series of concentric circles.

The visual distortion is produced by combining a regular line pattern (the circles) with misaligned parts (the differently colored strands). The Zöllner illusion and the café wall illusion are based on a similar principle, like many other visual effects, in which a sequence of tilted elements causes the eye to perceive phantom twists and deviations.

Argument from Incredulity



Argument from incredulity, also known as argument from personal incredulity, appeal to common sense, or the divine fallacy,[1] is a fallacy in informal logic. It asserts that a proposition must be false because it contradicts one's personal expectations or beliefs, or is difficult to imagine.

Arguments from incredulity can take the form:I cannot imagine how P could be true; therefore P must be false.

Arguments from incredulity can sometimes arise from inappropriate emotional involvement, the conflation of fantasy and reality, a lack of understanding, or an instinctive 'gut' reaction, especially where time is scarce.[2] They are also frequently used to argue that something must be supernatural in origin.[3] This form of reasoning is fallacious because one's inability to imagine how a statement can be true or false gives no information about whether the statement is true or false in reality.[

SSRI Teen Sexual Side Effects

"By now, the psychiatric profession generally recognizes high rates of sexual side effects in adults. And all six of the psychiatrists I talked with for this article noted the importance, when prescribing, of informing adolescent patients about the possibility. They also mentioned the necessity, depending on varying state laws about consent, of informing parents. But Dr. Awais Aftab, who works with adolescents and adults and is a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, thinks that most prescribers are not having that conversation. 'I know of very few psychiatrists who discuss it as a potential side effect,' he said, judging by patients who come to him after having seen other practitioners, by his educational work with practicing trainees and by conversations with colleagues. He added that genuine informed consent throughout the practice of medicine is all too rare. Doctors 'might ask you to look at a pamphlet,' he said. 'That’s the culture that has developed. It’s: Here’s the medication I’m recommending.'
Peggy J. Kleinplatz, a professor of medicine at the University of Ottawa, told me about a moment that shed light on how family physicians and other primary-care providers — who write the majority of S.S.R.I. prescriptions in the United States and Canada — might be thinking about informed consent with patients. In 2019, Kleinplatz gave a presentation to family physicians at a Canadian medical conference. She asked her audience of some 50 doctors how many of them were aware of the sexual side effects of S.S.R.I.s. 'Eighty percent raised their hands,' she estimated. She asked how many informed their patients about these effects when they prescribed. 'Just one hand went up.' Then she asked why they didn’t. 'They said it’s a matter of patient compliance.' To inform about potential sexual side effects, they worried, was to risk the patient not taking the drug that the doctor thought necessary."

Moynihan's Law

 Moynihan's Law is an observation attributed to Daniel Patrick Moynihan, stating that the number of complaints about human rights violations in a country is inversely proportional to the actual degree of such violations in that country. In essence, the more complaints and outcry about human rights abuses you hear from a country, the better its real human rights situation tends to be, and vice versa—the countries with the worst records often make the fewest complaints or claims about violations, either due to repression or lack of freedom to speak out.

Origin and Application

  • The phrase is commonly cited in discussions of international relations, particularly when analyzing which nations protest or complain about human rights violations.

  • The idea has been referenced in the context of United Nations debates and is used to illustrate how repressive regimes often quiet dissent or suppress criticism, leading to less reported abuse, while freer societies have more outspoken discussion and critique about their problems.

Restatement

  • Moynihan's Law is sometimes phrased as: "The degree of oppression of any people is an inverse function of the amount of cries of oppression one hears from them".

  • Another version says: "The more you hear complaints of human rights violations from a country, the better its human rights situation".

This maxim highlights the paradox that open, democratic nations may appear worse in media or in public debate because their problems are aired openly, while truly repressive countries appear better simply because criticism is silenced

Parental Investment Theory and Mating Behavior

Parental investment theory (Trivers 1972) proposes that the mating behavior of a species is shaped by the amount of parental investment by each sex.



According to Parental Investment Theory (Trivers, 1972), the relative proportion of parental investment—the time and energy devoted to the care of individual offspring—varies across the males and females of different species. In some species, males tend to provide more parental investment than females (e.g., the Mormon cricket; Gwynne, 1984). In other species, females possess the heavy-investing parental burdens (e.g., most mammals; Alcock, 1993; Clutton-Brock, 1991).One of Trivers’ keen insights was to note that sex differences in parental investment burdens are systematically linked to processes of sexual selection in ways that potentially relate to mating strategies. Namely, within a given species, the sex that invests less in offspring is intrasexually more competitive, especially over gaining sexual access to members of the opposite sex. That is, the lesser-investing sex (e.g., male elephant seals; Le Boeuf, 1974) is reliably more aggressive with their own sex, tends to die earlier, tends to mature later, and generally competes for mates with more vigor than the heavier-investing sex (see also Alexander & Noonan, 1979). Furthermore, the lesser-investing sex of a species is intersexually more indiscriminate in mate choice than the heavier-investing parent. The lesser-investing sex is willing to mate more quickly, at low cost, and with more partners than is the heavier-investing sex (Andersson, 1994; Bateson, 1983; Clutton-Brock & Parker, 1992; Maynard Smith, 1977).

The Shocking Difference Between How Boys & Girls Use Technology

Agency refers to an individual’s striving to master the environment, to assert the self, to experience competence, achievement, and power. In contrast, communion refers to a person’s desire to closely relate to and cooperate and merge with others (). Agency-oriented individuals experience fulfilment through their individual accomplishments and their sense of independence and separateness, whereas communion-oriented individuals experience fulfilment through their relationships with others and their sense of belonging ().
